Karamazoo
Presented by Peter Hussey - Crooked House Theatre Company,
Kildare
Karamazoo is a 20 minute monologue about a bullying
but popular and attractive teenager who reveals to us
his/her hidden pain, shame and determination to be dominant,
popular and cruel. It is fresh new writing from British
playwright and screenwriter Philip Ridley (The Krays,
The Pitchfork Disney, Brokenville), constituting one
of the most insightful and riveting monologues ever
written for a teenage actor. It is performed by Ger
Brady from Kildare Youth Theatre @ Crooked House and
directed by Peter Hussey. This play was commissioned
by the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain for its
international Shell Connections programme.
Show Reviews
"'Theatre Shorts' opened the first International
Gay Theatre Festival in the Teachers Club Parnell Square.
The Festival is to present works by gay authors, with
a gay character, theme or relevance and Theatre shorts
adequately reflected this ambition. Crooked House Theatre Company
from Kildare staged Philip Ridley's 25 minute monologue
called 'Karamazoo' where young actor Ger Brady took
us on a journey through the turmoil of pressures on
young men who battle between the conflict of masculinity
and machismo. In a convincing performance Brady held
the audience as he ably explored the dynamic range of
the central character. Humour, aggression, angst, emotion
bullying and self doubt were movingly portrayed in a
performance of skill, well directed by Peter Hussey."

created a multitude of distinct identities of the citizens
of Laramie. 'The Laramie Project' has much to teach
about contemporary Ireland and the importance of such
events like a gay theatre festival in a society where
homophobia lurks in the recesses of the excesses of
the past. Great theatre!" - Gordon Farrell ,
