Singing Out
Fri May 14th - Sat 15th, 8pm
"Singing Out" is a revue by two long established
performers in Irish Musical Theatre, Brian Merriman
and David Wray.
It traces the key works of gay composers and lyricists
in international musical theatre and presents these
(very familiar) works in a 'pink lense' for three nights
only. Backed by Aisling and Roisin O'Sullivan and Patrick
Kelliher.
Show Reviews
"Singing Out! - the only musical presentation
of the Festival took place in Bewley's Cafe Theatre
in Grafton Street. Presented by DAYMS - The Musical
Workshop, singer Brian Merriman and Musical Director
David Wray took us on a journey through a century of
gay writing and lyrics. Gay icons such as Doris day,
Connie Francis, Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland also
made an appearance in the amusing narration. Songs by
Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Ivor Novello, and the lyrics
of Lorenz Hart were professionally and nostalgically
portrayed in the first half of this acoustic performance.
The appearance of gay characters in musical theatre
and on film was the theme of Act Two with songs from
Fame, A Chorus Line and Rent. Dotted in amongst this
fascinating insight into gay music were two numbers
by the main performers - a ballad based on Oscar Wilde's
children's story 'The Happy Prince' and a hilarious
parody on 'All Kinds of Everything'. Merriman was ably
supported by a young cast of talented backing singers
including sisters Aisling and Roisin Sullivan, Patrick
Kelliher and Alan O Sullivan and I would like to hear
more of them in the future. Other highlights included
the 'Green Carnation' and the show stopping rendition
of 'Send in the Clowns' and 'My Favourite Year'.
I learned a lot about all sorts of musical theatre.
A great night of good music, and humour - would work
very well as a late night show!" - Gordon Farrell,
Scene City - June 2004
