[Press Release]:
Drama
Queen Party launches fifth Dublin Gay Theatre Festival
The fifth
International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival was launched last night
(01/05/08) at the Drama Queen party in the Front Lounge on Parliament
Street. The festival presents 41 Irish and International productions
between Bank Holiday Monday, May 5th and Sunday, May 18th in ten city
centre theatres. The shows in the festival are connected by all having
a gay theme, character or relevance. The programme includes drama,
comedy, musical theatre, late night cabaret, youth theatre and opera.
In addition, the festival will present a programme of free events that
includes free plays and an academic seminar in the Samuel Beckett
Theatre at Trinity College on Sunday, May 11th. The festival stages
over 300 performances during the fortnight and welcomes companies to
Ireland from the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Italy, the
Netherlands and the UK.
Highlights of
the festival programme, which was officially launched by Minister Eamon
Ryan last month, include ‘Corpus Christi’, the hugely controversial
play by multiple Tony and Emmy Award winner, Terrence McNally. In
February, it caused outrage among Australian religious leaders when it
was staged as part of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. A modern
day take on the story of Jesus, it depicts Jesus and his disciples as
gay. The play has been met with protests from religious groups in every
country it has played in since its opening in New York 10 years ago..
However, McNally defends it as a deeply conservative piece. Corpus
Christi runs at Smock Alley Theatre nightly from Monday, 12th to
Saturday, 17th May and a Saturday matinee.
Two US
productions are among four staged nightly at the Project Arts Centre
during the first week of the festival, from Monday, 5th to Saturday,
10th May. ‘The Eyes of Babylon’ depicts one soldier’s struggle to
reconcile his part in the Iraq war while ‘Nijinsky’s Last Dance’ tells
the story of the tragic Russian ballet dancer. It earned the ‘Critic’s
Choice’ from ‘The Scotsman’ at last year’s Edinburgh Festival. ‘The
Girly Side of Butch’, all the way from Adelaide, Australia brings a
real life ‘Priscilla’ story to Dublin in its candid insight into a life
of feathers, sequins and drag. Finally, celebrated British director
Patrick Wilde’s new play ‘Lightning Strikes’ has its world premiere at
the same venue.
Speaking at the
launch party, the festival’s Artistic Director, Brian Merriman said “We
are celebrating our fifth year and it is a significant anniversary for
this unique and innovative event that is designed to appeal to people
regardless of sexuality. In this, the Year of Intercultural Dialogue,
we are proud to welcome companies to Ireland from four continents.
Crucially, we are also a significant event in promoting intercultural
dialogue across our communities here in Ireland” he added.
The festival was
set up in 2004 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of
Oscar Wilde and has grown rapidly over the intervening years. This
year, it will take over 250 actors, crew, organisers and voluntary
staff to stage the event. For the first time, online booking is
available from the festival’s website, www.gaytheatre.ie. A dedicated
box office is also open inside Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre.
During the festival, a nightly after festival club will allow the
production companies to meet with the audience and each other. The
festival closes with a Gala Night and Awards in the Button Factory on
Sunday, May 18th.
