In 1988 Brian began to develop his career as a professional
director with stage productions throughout the professional
theatres of Northern Ireland, England, Wales and the
Isle of Man. He staged the world premieres of Shay Healeys
The Knowledge, David Henekers Peg of my Heart,
Paul Mc Nultys The Package, Steve Gavins
A Chelsea Affair and Brian Gallaghers Larkin the
Musical. He has staged the Irish and European premieres
of works by Stephen Sondheim, Kander and Ebb, Gerry
Herman, including Follies, Into the Woods, A Chorus
Line, The Hired Man, Zorba, Anything Goes, La Cage Aux
Folles, The Most Happy Fellow, to name a few.
In all Brian now has over 240 productions to his credit,
plus many more corporate events and murder mysteries.
He was the Artistic Director at the Dublin Viking Adventure
and Feast in Temple Bar in 1997, the year he also developed
successful one man shows Torch Songs and Theatre, Boy
Meets Girl and Singing Out to raise funds for Aids Charities.
In 1991 Brian established The Musical Company with
the aim of producing all Irish musical productions,
reviving a tradition dormant for nearly 20 years, and
directed and co produced Side By Side By Sondheim with
Tony Kenny and David Norris at Clontarf Castle and later
at the Olympia and directed and produced Annie The Musical
for an extended run in the Olympia in 1994 starring
Twink.
In 1995 Brian returned to the Olympia with his production
of one of his long-time favourite musicals The King
and I starring Gemma Craven and Stephen Brennan. He
produced and directed the All New Pirates Of Penzance
and Santas Great Christmas Adventure, which he
also composed and wrote for the Olympia in 1996. He
directed Rockinson Crusoe in 1997, Rockin Hood
in 1998, Puss in Boots in 1999 and Cinderella in 2000,
the hugely successful pantomimes starring Dustin and
Twink.
Brian devised, wrote and directed the biggest millennium
night celebration in Ireland - 1000 artists, 15 hours
of entertainment culminating in an audience of 50,000
people on the Quay in Waterford. Brian wrote and directed
the box office hit 100% Pure Irish Dance at the Olympia
and the Viking Show in Waterfords Granary Theatre.
Since DAYMS developed into The Musical Workshop in
2000, Brian has directed the world premieres of A Chelsea
Affair (when he played Oscar Wilde) and Larkin The Musical.
He directed and performed in DAYMS productions of La
Cage Aux Folles and Follies in 2003 and 2004 respectively,
both at the SFX City Theatre and recently presented
Zorba at Liberty Hall Theatre.
In 2004 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the
birth of Oscar Wilde, Brian established a theatrical
event unique in the world. The International Dublin
Gay Theatre Festival presents works from the USA, UK,
Isreal, Canada and South Africa, as well as a free theatre
programme, an exhibition and an international theatre
symposium with guest speaker Professor Alan Sinfield.
The Festival runs in the first full fortnight of May
every year and is supported by Dublin City Council,
the British Council, and Failte Ireland, and also commemorates
the theatrical contribution of Michael Mac Liammoir
and Hilton Edwards in a series of awards for new writing,
production and performance in their honour, adjudicated
by Brian as Artistic Director.
